What is Face Reading?
Face Reading or Mien Shiang is a nearly 3000-year-old Taoist practice of an art and a science that literally means face (mien) reading (shiang). If you know mien Shiang (pronounced myen shung), you can determine anyone’s character, personality, health, wealth potential, social standing, and longevity simply by looking at their face.
One of our most primitive instincts is the search for self-discovery. Who am I? This is the question that has occupied the thoughts and emotions of philosophers, poets, and dreamers everywhere, for all time. Mien Shiang can help you in your search for self. By looking in the mirror and studying your face, you can develop a profound understanding of your true nature. Identifying your true nature helps you first to recognize your inborn gifts and challenges, and then how to balance them to live your life, every single day, to its fullest. Mien Shiang can also give you similar insights into everyone in your life. It can help you choose your true mate and find the best boss or hire a top employee. It can make all your family, professional, and social relationships smoother and richer. And, by knowing the significance of certain facial markings, Mien Shiang can help keep you healthy—it might even save your life.

Prepare Your Environment: Create A Comfortable Space
- Choose a well-lighted, quiet, private setting
- Adjust lights, blinds and curtains so that the natural light falls on your face; make sure you are not backlit
- Schedule a time when you will not be interrupted or disturbed
- Have adequate childcare in place so you can be relaxed
- Have pet care or a place to keep a demanding or insecure pet
- Post a Do Not Disturb sign on your doors, if necessary
- Turn off ahead of time all phones, Emails, notification alerts, iPads, tablets, other computers, radios, TVs, obtrusive fans, noisy air conditioners, and so on
- Close doors and windows if outside noise is disturbing
- Be sure your device’s microphone is adequate for both you and for Patrician to hear each other clearly
- Do not use camera filters that make you look different — we need to see the real you; lines and markings help tell your story
- Make sure your device’s battery is fully charged. Perhaps have a backup device in case something goes wrong
- Have a device that can stand on its own (a desktop, laptop, or mobile phone on a stable stand, for instance) — not one that must be handheld
- Find a chair from which you can easily move closer to your device or stand up — you may be asked to lean in to the device’s camera, or to stand up so that your body Qi can be assessed
- Have paper and pen ready

- Pull back your hair so that your face is fully exposed, including your ears; use ties, pins, clips, headbands, gels – whatever works
- Remove your eyeglasses, if comfortable
- Do not wear a hat or head scarf that would cover your ears, hairline, forehead, brow bones, eye brows, or eyes
- Remove ear rings and/or cuffs
- Do not wear (excessive) makeup
Online Face Reading FAQs
Patrician offers Online Face Readings for individuals, couples, small family groups, and small business working teams.
Individual readings may be booked by making full payment via PayPal. Once PayPal confirms with Patrician’s office, someone will promptly contact you by Email to set up the appointment.
Most often, the reading can be scheduled within a week depending on your and Patrician’s schedules (and time zones!). When Patrician is traveling to teach workshops and seminars that last for a few days, the wait time might be a bit longer.
Couples, Family, and Business Team readings need to be pre-approved. Send and Email describing the group and the group’s needs and we will be in touch with you promptly to discuss the best way to set up and conduct the reading.
*A note: all Online Face Readings are Five Element Personality readings. The Mien Shiang Institute/Patrician McCarthy does not conduct Facial Diagnosis (medical) Readings online.
*Audio and/or video recordings of the reading are not allowed. You agree to this when signing up for and making payment for your reading.
Each reading is different and unique. You will learn which features reveal your biggest gifts — and what those gifts are and how you can best develop and use them.
You will also learn which features disclose your challenges, and you will receive some suggestions on how to turn your challenges into gifts. Every facial feature, shape, and size reveals something specific about your personality and behavior, as does each marking and coloration.
All of these distinct attributes fit together like pieces of a puzzle and reveal your Taoist Five Element personality type. Your reading will show you which Element (or combination of Elements) most accurately describe your true nature and behaviors, and which Elements have traits that do not apply to you and your personality.
Patrician is an experienced, skilled, and qualified Face Reader and teacher of the Taoist Five Elements and is expert in defining and interpreting the characteristics and traits that describe you as well as understanding how they interact and affect you. Her suggestions are based on the art and science of Mien Shiang, and she enjoys sharing her insights with her clients.
Patrician will begin and end the reading on time which is why it is important to follow our suggested Guidelines and Tips so that you get the most from your reading. Every reading is different and unique. Each client brings their own energy, expectations, and personality to the reading.
Patrician will lead and guide you so that you get the best results from this valuable experience. Your reading will be interactive. Patrician will ask to see your face at different angles, such as full face, each profile or 3/4 profiles, as well as standing up so she can assess your body Qi. She will ask you a few questions and share with you what she sees and what it means.
You will have the opportunity to ask questions and interact throughout the entire reading. If there is something in particular that you want to know from this reading, let us know when you book your appointment or at least at the start of the reading.
If you have had plastic, cosmetic or reconstructive surgery, or chemical or fat injections, let Patrician know as it will affect the reading and perhaps her feedback / prescription.

Face Reading & the Five Element Personality Types
Your face reading will reveal all sorts of personality and behavioral traits such as how much passion you have, if you are a natural risk-taker, if you are willful —even stubborn. You will have a majority of traits associated with one or two of the Elements and only a few traits associated with one or two of the other Elements. This is useful in determining your Five Element Personality type.
